Beijing authorities today refused to accept the demand from a UN organization on releasing the prominent human rights activist Gao Zhisheng.  Gao Zhisheng has been under secret detention by the Chinese authorities for over two years, but Beijing authorities claim China is a country under rule of law.

During the reporters’ inquires, Jiang Yu, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, said China attaches great importance to its cooperation with UN human rights organizations, but at the same time, this spokesperson calls on UN organizations to respect China’s sovereignty.  This spokesperson claims that China is a country under rule of law.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention subordinate to the United Nations Council on Human Rights recently published a report demanding that China release Gao Zhisheng.  The investigation report of this group has concluded that China’s detention of Gao Zhisheng has violated the international law and the Chinese law.
This UN document calls Gao Zhisheng an outstanding lawyer who is famous for protecting human rights.  Gao Zhisheng was arrested by the authorities in February 2009 and has been under secret detention ever since.
The Chinese police and the judicial authorities refuse to present the arrest warrant and refuse to publicly state the charges against Gao Zhisheng.  They are not even willing to publicly admit that they are detaining Gao Zhisheng and refuse to explain to his family why they took away Gao Zhisheng.
According to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, the detention of Gao Zhisheng has violated the universal principles of human rights and has also violated the UN conventions on human rights that the Chinese government has signed.
This UN organization demands that the “Chinese government release Gao Zhisheng immediately” and demands that the Chinese government be in line with the international law in arresting, detaining and sentencing people.
