(Wenzhou, Zhejiang—July 14, 2015) Despite the crackdown against human rights lawyers and advocates, a group of Christian human rights lawyers, led by attorney Zhang Kai, announced the formation of the “Lawyers for Protection of the Cross” group today.

The group aims to fight for religious freedom according to China’s existing laws. Zhang, who was briefly detained and interrogated during the weekend’s persecution of rights lawyers, said they vow to fight peacefully, orderly and legally against the forced removal of crosses throughout China, specifically Zhejiang province, where persecution against Christian churches began in early 2014.

The group proclaimed they are willing to pay the price of whatever illegal, unjust punishment they may face due to standing up for their beliefs.
