(Hangzhou, Zhejiang—Nov. 12, 2015) A Three-Self church whose door was damaged during a forced cross demolition in June told China Aid that as of late October, it has not received compensation for the door, as was promised by a government official.

A team comprised of various government organizations demolished the cross atop Panshi Church in Hangzhou during the early morning of June 19. In order to gain access to the roof and cross, authorities destroyed the lock on the church’s door and damaged the door in the process, despite protests from church leadership.

Police at the incident told church members that the social development bureau would be responsible for repaying damages, but as of Oct. 23, the church has yet to receive compensation or even replies to requests for payment.

The church also reported that, in the days leading up to the cross demolition, a person who “appeared to be a migrant worker” was seen watching the church from across the street.
