(Beijing—Nov. 10, 2016) A prominent Chinese university in Beijing recently erected a sign forbidding religious activities on campus, violating its students, faculty, and staff’s state-sanctioned right to religious belief.
Renmin University of China, one of the most renowned schools in Chinese higher education, displayed a sign that requested quiet, maintenance of the cleanly environment, and no religious activities on campus. This violates Article 36 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, which reads:
Citizens of the People’s Republic of China enjoy freedom of religious belief.
No state organ, public organization or individual may compel citizens to believe in, or not to believe in, any religion; nor may they discriminate against citizens who believe in, or do not believe in, any religion.
China Aid reports abuses, such as those enacted by Renmin University of China, in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom in China.
