(Yili, Xinjiang—March 9, 2018) A Kazakh poet and writer has been missing since authorities arrested him in January, presumably for writing a historical book, ChinaAid recently learned.

Authorities secretly arrested 50-year-old Beresisbek Abdulizak, a writer and Kazakh history enthusiast, in his home on Jan. 1, shortly after he published a book about Kazakh independence movements before and after Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution. The book enraged the authorities, and they banned the rest of his works, confiscated his passport and green card, and placed him under strict police surveillance. Twice in 2017, they sent him to an “anti-extremist training center.”

Abdulizak graduated from a local university with a literature degree in 1990. Since 1999, he has visited Kazakhstan many times, and his works have won numerous awards in the country.

ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by Abdulizak, in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
