(Lincang, Yunnan—July 25, 2018) A court in China’s southwestern Yunnan province rejected the appeals of Christians wrongly sentenced to lengthy prison terms, according to recent court documents.

The Christians, Ju Dianghong, Liang Qin, Yang Shunxiang, Zhang Hongyan, Zhang Shaocai, and Zi Huimei were charged with participating in the Three Grades of Servants, a religious institution the Chinese Communist Party labels a cult, as part of a province-wide crackdown on the cult’s activities that ended up targeting Christians. They received harsh, multi-year sentences, with Ju Dianhong given 13 years for allegedly being a cult leader. The defendants deny involvement, however, saying they only participated in Christian activities. They appealed their case, but the court upheld the original sentencing.

The court documents can be read here and here.

ChinaAid condemns China’s treatment of these Christians and exposes the abuses they suffered in order to promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law. We also call on citizens of the free world to openly speak out against their arrest and demand their immediate and unconditional release.
