(Ningxia—Aug. 10, 2018) Government officials from China’s north-central Ningxia notified Muslims within the region’s Tongxin County of a time-sensitive demolition.
Leaders of local mosques have been given an ultimatum: destroy all unregistered mosques or have them forcibly torn down by the government. This order comes just after local adherents to Islam completed a new mosque, which cost them around 100 million yuan [$14,605,790.00 USD]. Although local authorities attended a ceremony that marked the start of the construction work, no one said it was an illegal building, even though now it is considered as such because it lacks registration.
China often demands the demolition of religious venues—such as temples, mosques, and churches—that have not been approved by the government. Once approved, the religious activities conducted within them must also gain permittance from the government, and spiritual teachings that the Communist Party deems in opposition to its agenda are eliminated. This is part of an ongoing attempt to brainwash Chinese people and reshape them into the Party’s firm supporters.
ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by Muslims in Ningxia, in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
