(Jixi, Heilongjiang—Sept. 9, 2018) The leader of an unregistered church in China’s northeastern Heilongjiang province received a notice from the authorities on Tuesday, threatening a hefty fine if the church members refused to submit to government censorship.

On Sept. 4, the church leader, Chen Xiuliang, obtained a document from the local authorities, commanding his church to close and its members to join the government-run Three-Self Churches by Sept. 10. If they refused the church will be fined 50,000 yuan (approximately $7,453.75 USD).

ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by Chen’s church, in order to oppose persecution and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
