Khenpo Karma Tsewang

Khenpo Karma Tsewang, also known as Khenpo Kartse, is a Tibetan monk who was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison in a secret trial in the summer of 2014.

Khenpo Karma Tsewang was the abbot of a monastery in China’s inland Qinghai province. According to International Campaign for Tibet, Khenpo Karma Tsewang is known for his “environmental activism, disaster relief work, and commitment to the preservation of the Tibetan language.”

On Dec. 6, 2013, security officials from the Chamdo prefecture in Tibet detained Khenpo Karma Tsewang in Chengdu, Sichuan province, where the monk had gone to buy a Buddhist statue. Police reportedly suspected him of “anti-state activities” in Chamdo.

Police later told Khenpo Karma Tsewang’s lawyers that he had “divulged state secrets” and was accused of harboring “fugitive” monks from another monastery, according to Radio Free Asia.

Khenpo Karma Tsewang, who suffers from hepatitis, bronchitis and tuberculosis, was reported to have been sentenced by a Chamdo court to 2 1/2 years in prison; however, no confirmation has ever been received.
