Wang Zhiwen

Wang Zhiwen was released from prison on Oct. 18, 2014. According to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, Wang was “immediately sent to what his family describes as a ‘brainwashing center’ for 10 days.” Wang’s freedom of movement has been restricted since his release.

Background:
Wang Zhiwen, a PRC Ministry of Railways engineer, became a Falun Gong practitioner in 1992.

On July 20, 1999, Wang was seized from his bed by police and taken away. This was the same day the Chinese Communist Party began its crackdown on Falun Gong.

On Dec. 26, 1999, Wang was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The sentencing trial, in which Wang was one of four defendants, was nationally broadcasted, and it was clear to viewers that the defendants had been physically abused. The four were convicted of “organizing and using a heretical organization to cause death” and “illegally obtaining state secrets.

Wang was born in 1949.
