(Almaty, Kazakhstan—Feb. 11, 2018) Angered over the loss of hundreds of their pensions, dozens of Kazakh protesters gathered outside the Chinese consulate in Almaty on Monday.

Propelled by Xinjiang authorities’ recent decision to cancel the pensions of its Kazakh and Uyghur residents who traveled outside of the country in order to contain them in Xinjiang, the protesters demanded the reinstatement of the pay. An unnamed Kazakh person said that the protesters were all ethnic Kazakhs who had moved from Xinjiang to Kazakhstan, and they held Chinese passports to prove that they used to work in Xinjiang and deserved their rightful pay from the Chinese Communist Party.

“According to Chinese law, Chinese citizens who immigrate to other countries can receive a pension from China, but the Xinjiang authorities disregarded the law and suspended their pensions,” the anonymous source said.

Many of the Kazakh Chinese citizens move to Kazakhstan to reunite with their families post-retirement. Until last year, their pensions remained uninterrupted.

A resident of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, said the local health planning commission issued a notice last year asking all retirees currently living in Kazakhstan to return to China before Oct. 31, the day before the pensions were suspended. However, the government did not release the provisions publicly.

ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by the Kazakh and Uyghur people in Xinjiang, in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
