(Mianyang, Sichuan—June 18, 2018) Human rights advocate Huang Qi will stand trial at 10 a.m. on Thursday in China’s Sichuan province, according notices received by his lawyers.

Huang was arrested in November 2016, and according to a notice his lawyers received announcing the hearing, charged with providing state secrets to foreign powers on account of his human rights work. While in prison, he has been extremely ill, suffering from renal failure, swelling, and other conditions.

When his mother attempted to bail him out several times, the court turned down her application.

Huang and his wife run the “6/4 Tianwang” website, which bears a name referencing the Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4, 1989, and he became one of the first dissidents to be imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party for posting online. In 2000, he was arrested twice and served eight years in prison.

ChinaAid condemns China’s treatment of Huang Qi and other dissidents like him and exposes the abuses they suffer in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
