(Changsha, Hunan—July 24, 2018) A woman who claimed the Chinese Communist Party subjected her to “oppressive brain control” has been forcibly admitted to a psychiatric hospital for tossing ink on a portrait of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Radio Free Asia reported yesterday.
Dong Yaoqiong expressed her opposition to the government’s tight control by recording herself dumping ink on the photo on July 4. Just before marring the image, she says, “There is a portrait of Xi Jinping behind me. What I want to say is that I am using my real name to oppose Xi Jinping’s tyranny and dictatorship and the oppressive brain control perpetrated on me by the Chinese Communist Party.”
Later, she used her Twitter handle, the now-deleted @feefeefly, to say that uniformed government officials had come to her apartment.
According to Radio Free Asia, other dissidents have speculated that the “brain control” comment might reference the government’s attempts to interfere with her mental well-being. Now, she is being kept under forced, constant surveillance in a private psychiatric hospital room located in Zhuzhou, Hunan. Her father, Dong Jianbiao, has since been to see her, but person who answered the phone at the hospital told Radio Free Asia that there was no record of her.
The news source also reports that other activists have been targeted for defending her in acts that one calls “making a mountain out of a molehill….”
