(Guangzhou—Nov. 22, 2018) Pastor Huang Xiaoning from Guangzhou’s Bible Reformed Church was released Friday after serving five days in detention.

He said, “On the morning of the 16th, [official from] the Dashi Police Station and the neighborhood office came to the Panyu Detention Center to pick me up and take me home.”

In regards to why he was detained, he said, “[The police] said that we still had a Sunday service on Aug. 19 even though we were banned from it on July 30. That is, they asked me to stop the services, but I didn’t, so I was charged with obstructing law enforcement.”

China often forces churches that are not associated with the state-run Three-Self Patriotic Movement [TSPM] to close, because they are technically considered illegal. However, the Chinese Constitution guarantees its citizens religious freedom in Article 36, and many churches refuse to join the TSPM because the Communist Party censors sermons and inserts propaganda into the services.

ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by Huang, in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
