(Zhengzhou, Henan—Feb. 26, 2019) An imprisoned human rights attorney will not be allowed to return home after his release on Thursday, Chinese officials told his family.
Jiang Tianyong, a lawyer who was taken into custody in November 2016 after visiting the family of his then-imprisoned colleague, Xie Yang, is nearing the end of his two-year prison sentence on an “inciting subversion of state power” charge and expected to be freed on Thursday. However, Radio Free Asia quoted his wife, U.S.-resident Jin Bianling, saying that Jiang will not be allowed to return home and instead be moved “‘to the provincial capital Zhengzhou, where the authorities would find him a place to live and a job, because Jiang was … born in Henan and his registration is there.’”
Extensive surveillance after release after release is a tactic China commonly employs against human rights lawyers. Xie, who vanished after his trial, reappeared and was allowed to live at his own apartment, but officials took up residence across from him and installed a barred metal gate that only opened with a fingerprint scanner. His wife, Chen “Gloria” Guiqiu, contacted international media when she heard of the gate, and officials removed it after it gained widespread international scrutiny.
ChinaAid calls on the Chinese government to allow Jiang to return home to his family upon his release and let him live as a free man, as is according to the rule of law.
