(Taipei, Taiwan—Feb. 14, 2019) A Taiwanese woman has been forbidden from visiting her husband because she held a press conference to expose the conditions of his confinement in a Chinese prison.
When Li Chingyu last saw her husband, Taiwanese dissident Li Mingche, on Dec. 18 at Chishan Prison in Hunan, he had lost 66 pounds, reported being forced to work more than 10 hours a day in violation of China’s prison laws, and is being made to eat rotten food. In addition, his coat and personal items were confiscated, the clothes his family sent to him were rejected, and his bank account has been frozen, meaning he cannot purchase anything items sold in the prison.
Disturbed by what she saw, Li Chingyu held a press conference upon her return to Taiwan and told reporters everything she had learned about her husband’s condition. In response, the spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Ma Xiaoguang, accused her of distorting the facts, and Chishan Prison announced that she would not be allowed to visit Li Mingche for three months because “ignored facts.”
Li Mingche was sentenced to five years in prison in November 2017 on a “subversion of state power” charge after he defended human rights in China from Taiwan.
