(Brussels—March 14, 2019) ChinaAid signed a joint letter urging the European Union (EU) and its member states to pressure China on its abuse of human rights.
The letter, signed by 13 organizations in total, encourages the EU to “take action to defend international human rights and religious freedom,” going on to cite atrocities suffered by ethnic minority Muslims living in Xinjiang, dissidents, and human rights critics among the cases of concern. It goes on to say the Chinese government has put pressure on other nations to deport Chinese people who have sought asylum elsewhere.
Released yesterday, the letter hopes comes in time for a series of talks between China and the EU, which come ahead of the EU-China Summit. As such, the signatories hope that the EU can address China’s human rights abuses with Chinese leaders.
