(Beijing—March 15, 2019) The wife and family of a lawyer targeted in a 2015 nationwide crackdown has been under close surveillance during the meetings of China’s two major political bodies.
Yuan Shanshan, the wife of persecuted lawyer Xie Yanyi, said she and her children were followed when they left their home on the third day of the Two Sessions, or the series of meetings of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). When she asked the person trailing them why they were being followed, he bullied her.
Upon returning home, she discovered that authorities stationed at the local court were using cameras to monitor her family. She said her family has been under surveillance for a while now, but it has been increased during the Two Sessions.
Xie, who used his legal license to defend human rights, was initially caught up in a crackdown on rights attorneys that occurred in China in 2015.
