(Funan County, Anhui—April 27, 2019) Several hundred Christians were left without a place to worship when authorities in China’s eastern Anhui province tore down a church on Sept. 12, ChinaAid recently learned.

When authorities demolished the building, known as East Church and located in the Dinan Village of Funan County, Anhui, they alleged that it was a dangerous structure. However, because the church’s site was at the south gate for a farmers’ market the local government was hoping to build, some suspect the officials razed the church in order to make way for the market.

Similarly, authorities are offering cash to individuals within the area who allow them to demolish their property. A villager, who would like to remain anonymous, told a local reporter, “The village signed an agreement with us that says each person would be compensated 6,000 yuan [$889.90 USD] if we let them demolish our homes.”

The church, however, received no compensation.
