Human rights organizations to hold protest in front of Chinese Embassy ahead of China’s National Day

ChinaAid

(Washington, D.C.—Sept. 26, 2019) On Sunday, ChinaAid and 19 other human rights organizations will co-sponsor a protest outside of the Chinese embassy to voice opposition to the Chinese Communist Party’s 70-year rule and support freedom in Hong Kong, where citizens continue to fight for their freedom.

The protest comes ahead of China’s 70th National Day on Oct. 1. Over the past seven decades, the Chinese Communist Party claims its rule has brought prosperity and happiness to its citizens. However, it has routinely harassed, detained, arrested, tortured, and even killed Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, dissidents, pro-democracy activists, practitioners of the spiritual discipline Falun Gong, human rights lawyers, and ethnic minority Muslims, among other people groups.

In addition, earlier this year, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam introduced an extradition bill that would have allowed the Chinese government to bring criminally accused Hong Kong residents to the mainland for trial. This sparked a series of ongoing protests, as those living in the former British colony feared this bill would allow China to seize religious adherents, activists, and human rights defenders, much like it does in the mainland. The bill has since been withdrawn, but the protests continue as Hong Kong residents demand the resignation of key Hong Kong officials, including Lam, and ask for the immediate and unconditional release of those arrested for protesting. In addition, they want the government to stop characterizing the protests as “riots” in the media.

To stand in solidarity with Hong Kong’s residents and against the abuses of the Chinese Communist Party, 20 human rights organizations are holding a protest outside of the Chinese Embassy in the Unites States, located at 3505 International Pl. NW, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019.

The organizations include ChinaAid, the Chinese Alliance for Democracy, Citizen Power Initiatives for China, the China Democracy Party’s Eastern U.S. Headquarters, the China Organ Harvesting Research Center, the Association Against Religious Persecution, Justice Cuba, Dialogue China, Democracy China Media, East Turkistan National Awakening Movement, Chinese Justice Television, IPK Media, Students for a Free Tibet, Support Hong Kong Global Alliance, International Campaign for Tibet, Chen Guangcheng Foundation, Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Center, Southern Mongolia Congress, Princeton China Initiative, Uyghur American Association.
