(Washington, D.C.—June 21, 2019) U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told “Fox News Sunday” that President Donald Trump plans to discuss the rights of Hong Kong residents with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a global summit taking place in Japan later this month.
The two officials are set to meet at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, next week, where Trump plans to dialogue with Xi on human rights in Hong Kong. The conversation will follow extensive protests in the Chinese special administrative region (SAR) opposing a bill that would allow Hong Kong residents to be extradited to China for trial and prosecution. The proposed bill triggered fears that dissenters to the Communist Party and various religious groups would be at increased risk. Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam indefinitely suspended it on Saturday, pending further revisions.
The summit will take place from June 28-29 and will serve as a platform for world leaders to convene and discuss trade, economics, and a variety of issues pertaining to the relationships between their countries.
