Dr. Bob Fu: Four years after the 709 Incident, international community should hold Chinese government accountable for crimes

(Midland, Texas—July 9, 2019) Four years ago, Chinese officials launched a nationwide campaign to seize hundreds of human rights lawyers.

Many were hauled away for questioning or harassed. Others were given multi-year prison sentences and tortured or forced to take medication behind bars.

This crackdown is known colloquially as the “709 Incident” because it began on July 9, 2015.

ChinaAid President Bob Fu characterizes the event as the “beginning of the deteriorating situation for the rule of law in China.”

According to him, “four years later, the Chinese Communist regime led by President Xi Jinping has only demonstrated rule by man.”

Lawyer Jiang Tianyong spent years in secret detention and in prison for rallying support for colleagues targeted by authorities.

Previous reporting by ChinaAid details some of the torture against Jiang while in custody and his continued harassment by government officials.

On the four-year anniversary of the 709 Incident, several lawyers of the Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Group call for the immediate restoration of Jiang’s personal liberty, along with halting by judicial authorities of “suppression and persecution of human rights lawyers in their jurisdiction,” according to China Change.

The collective calls for the release of lawyers Zhou Shifeng, Wang Quanzhang, Yu Wensheng, Li Yuhan, Chen Jiahong and Gao Zhisheng, and many citizen rights defenders.

ChinaAid also joins in advocating for the rights of human rights attorneys in China. We ask the media and international policymakers to pay close attention to legal defenders who sacrifice their freedom on behalf of human rights abuse victims.

ChinaAid President Bob Fu calls upon the global community to hold the Chinese Community Party and its perpetrators accountable for crimes, which include the interment of Uyghurs, persecution against human rights defenders and lawyers, and enforced disappearances, imprisonment, and torture of those who fight for freedom.

ChinaAid exposes abuses in order to stand in solidarity with the persecuted and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law. If you wish to partner with us in helping those persecuted by the Chinese government, please click the button below to make a charitable donation.
