(Korla, Xinjiang—Oct. 10, 2019) Jehovah’s Witnesses have suffered abuse during their time in a detention center in Korla, Xinjiang. They gave testimony during hearings on June 3 and Sept. 9-10.

Lawyers reported guards have punished the prisoners “on the pretext of violating the detention center’s provisions and refusing to sing [patriotic] songs.”

Some of them were handcuffed and shackled, with a five-kilogram weight attached to the chain. Those chained were not able to stand, and “sometimes had to crawl on all fours, like a dog,” according to the attorneys. One of the chained inmates, Jiang Xijun, attempted to commit suicide.

At least two of the women, Xu Yanli and Huang Li, had their heads shaved. Xu, Huang, and two other female prisoners, Yang Hua and Zhang Min, reported experiencing humiliation.

Police took 18 Jehovah’s Witnesses into custody last year on charges related to using religion to interfere with law enforcement.
