(Washington, D.C.—Oct. 30, 2019) A committee of the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act today.
The Act’s Statement of Purpose reads, “The purpose of this Act is to direct United States resources to address gross violations of universally recognized human rights, including the mass internment of over 1,000,000 Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in China and the intimidation and threats faced by United States citizens and legal permanent residents.”
It passed the House’s Committee of Foreign Affairs today.
It comes on the heels of mounting evidence that the Chinese government is targeting minority people in its Xinjiang region. Such people are held in camps, where they are routinely starved and tortured. Many have died or disappeared.
