(Yuanyang, Henan—Oct. 22, 2019) A pastor in China’s Henan province has been in custody for the past eight months.

Authorities detained the pastor, Li Juncai, after he refused to change a slogan in his church—“Love God and people”—to “Love the country and religion.” He was charged with “suspicion of disrupting public service” on Feb. 20, 2019.

Three others were arrested with him, but they were released. Li is still behind bars and has also been accused of destroying accounts and position encroachment.

At first, he was not allowed to meet with his lawyer, but they were eventually permitted consultations.
