Lawyer vanishes in Wuhan

(Wuhan, Hubei—Feb. 10, 2020) The family of Beijing-based lawyer Chen Qiushi is searching for information after he went missing in Wuhan last week.

Wuhan, located in China’s Hubei province, is the epicenter of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic. Around 11 million people are now trapped within the city’s limits, with Chen entering just before authorities closed off all travel.

Chen, who does reporting in addition to his legal work, was visiting Wuhan to document the outbreak and published his findings online. Last Wednesday, he went missing.

The state security bureau told his parents he had been quarantined, but some are growing suspicious. Chen was in good health prior to his disappearance. In addition, the state security bureau is the state police, and handling the coronavirus is the responsibility of another department.
