(Urumqi, Xinjiang—March 7, 2020) The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) issued a report on Sunday claiming 83 prominent brands might sell products made by Uyghur forced labor.
Over the last few years, Chinese authorities have targeted the Uyghur people, a Turkic people group often persecuted by the Chinese government. So far, more than 1 million have been imprisoned in “re-education camps.” The officials say there, inmates receive vocational training, but many survivors report starvation, torture, and forced labor with little to no pay.
Now, China is shipping Uyghur people to factories across the country against their will. There, they are also made to work.
ASPI says 83 brands have active relationships with these factories, including Google, Lacoste, Sony, Nike, Nintendo, Gap, Samsung, Volkswagen, Huawei, and BMW. As a result, it is possible that products made by Uyghur people against their will has been bought and sold on the international market.
