(Chengdu, Sichuan—April 22, 2020) The police in Chengdu, the capital city of China’s Sichuan province, attacked Early Rain Covenant Church on April 10.

It was Good Friday, and the church was holding online Sunday School services. Hundreds were in virtual attendance.

Then, the Chengdu police sent out teams of officers to break into the homes of a few of the church’s attendees. The authorities ordered them to stop the online gathering and registered their ID cards before taking them to the police station for investigation.

One of the Christians refused to cooperate, and the officials cut off his family’s power supply and took him away. That afternoon, he was released, and the power supply was restored.

At the police station, the church attendees were questioned about who was organizing the online gatherings and who was in charge. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many Early Rain Covenant Church Christians have chosen to carry out their religious services online. However, they have said officials have used illegal means to obtain information on their services and have attempted to block them.

Across China, similar government monitoring of online church services occurred.

Authorities have consistently harassed Early Rain Covenant Church over the years, including taking around 150 of its members into custody in December 2018. Its pastor, Wang Yi, was sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement with the church.
