Wife prevented from sending items to husband

(Beijing—April 7, 2020) The wife of an imprisoned Christian attempted to send him money and clothes, but authorities prevented her from doing so.

The Christian, Jiang Zhanchun, was arrested on Sept. 26 on a false charge of picking quarrels and provoking trouble. He was then placed under house arrest, during which he was not even allowed to take a bath, before being criminally detained at the end of February. Afterward, he was accused of government disruption.

Before his time in police custody, Jiang suffered from health conditions, including nasal inflammation and asthma. In the past, police also beat him and injured his waist.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, Jiang’s wife, Ma Yuzhen, has been very worried for his health. On March 28, she went to the detention center to send him clothes and money and inquire about his condition. However, the police did not give her any information on him and would not give him the clothing or the cash.
