CPDC: How to stand with Hong Kong

(Washington, D.C.-May 29, 2020) The Committee on the Present Danger: China released advice on how the U.S. can stand with Hong Kong today.

The statements came after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared Hong Kong no longer independent from China. This indicated possible trade ramifications for the former British territory, which currently enjoys benefits from the U.S., so long as they retain a certain degree of autonomy from China. Pompeo is in charge of annually assessing whether Hong Kong is suitably separate from China on an annual basis.
Pompeo’s move occurred on the heels of Beijing announcing it would introduce a national security law to Hong Kong, forbidding secession from China,  subverting the Chinese Communist Party, treason, and sedition. A similar law in mainland China is often used to persecute people who believe in a religion and activists in opposition to the state.
Because of this, the CPDC issued a roadmap for the U.S. to follow in order to support Hong Kong. The recommendations included Pompeo declaring Hong Kong non-autonomous and President Trump pressing sanctions on Hong Kong and China that would disallow them from benefitting from financial settlements reserved for nations who respect the rule of law.
