Pompeo stands with Hong Kong

(Washington, D.C.—May 27, 2020) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo informed the U.S. Congress today that Hong Kong should no longer be considered separate from China.

Citing “facts on the ground,” Pompeo Tweeted that Hong Kong is “no longer autonomous from China.” Hong Kong enjoys benefits from the U.S. that are dependent on a certain degree of autonomy from China. Pompeo is in charge of assessing whether or not Hong Kong has maintained that autonomy.

The statement comes after China introduced a national security law for Hong Kong. The law bans secession, sedition, and subversion of the Chinese government. A similar law governing mainland China is often used to arrest and otherwise target human rights defenders and religious practitioners. It has drawn massive international backlash.
