(Beijing—June 19, 2020) Lawyer Yu Wensheng was sentenced to four years in prison after he stood secret trial.

In January 2018, Yu provided the media with a letter calling for changes to China’s constitution. Included in this was a call for presidential elections that featured multiple candidates.

Voice of America quotes him as writing, “Designating the nation’s president, as head of state, through a single party election has no meaning as an election,” he wrote. “It has no power to win confidence from the nation, civil society, or the world’s various countries.”

Hours later, he was behind bars.

Since then, his wife has not seen him, and his defense lawyer has only been able to meet with him twice.

Authorities tried Yu secretly and sentenced him to four years in prison for supposedly “inciting subversion of state power.”

Yu has long been a defender of rights in China, providing legal representation to targeted people such as human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang.
