Opinion: Mr. Xi, tear down this wall!

(Midland, Texas—June 12, 2020) 33 years ago today, President Ronald Reagan stood in front of the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin and issued a ringing command: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

The Berlin Wall, erected in 1961 to separate democratic West Germany from the communist East Germany, locked millions away from the free flow of information. Now, more than two decades after it was torn down, the world faces a different wall: China’s internet censorship.

Dubbed the “Great Firewall of China,” it blocks knowledge from the outside world by censoring platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and select news sites. Meanwhile, China’s state-run media feeds the public propaganda. Reporters, even those from foreign news agencies, have been punished for sharing the truth, and it is illegal for Chinese citizens to buy VPNs.

China portrays itself as a country founded on greatness, but truly great nations have nothing to hide. Corralling citizens, whether physically or mentally, was not an acceptable way to run a country in 1987, and it is not acceptable now.

If China truly wishes to prove itself a modern nation, worthy of respect among the others, then we have one simple request for Chinese President Xi Jinping: Mr. Xi, tear down this wall!
