(Xinyang, Henan—Aug. 28, 2020) County officials in China’s Henan province have ordered the investigation of “illegal” religious activities for a month.
In a notice, the Gushi County Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau said authorities should crack down on religion from Aug. 20-Sept. 20. The notice also listed a telephone number and encouraged the public to collect videos, images, or recordings of religious activities.
These recordings would then be reported to the local ethnic and religious affairs bureau or community office.
Any person providing valid information on “illegal” religious activities will be awarded 500 yuan ($72.80 USD).
In China, any religious activities conducted without the approval of the government are deemed “illegal.”
