Record of the “129 Crackdown” on Chengdu Early Rain Covenant Church: Reminder to remember those persecuted

(Chengdu, Sichuan Province—Dec. 30, 2020) On the evening of December 09, 2018, during what became known as the “129 Crackdown,” the Chengdu Municipal Police Department dispatched more than 2,000 police officers to raid the Chengdu Early Rain Covenant Church (ERCC).

During the “crackdown,” Chinese Communist Party police officers:

  • arrested Pastor Wang Yi and more than 500 congregants of ERCC. 
  • assaulted seniors,
    children, disabled individuals, and pregnant women.
  • raided the home of pregnant, female Christian surnamed
    Sun at midnight,* dragging her outside by her hair and striking her…; stress/physical abuse led to miscarriage.**

Officials responsible for the crackdown: 

  • Sun Lijuan, current Vice Minister of the Ministry of Public Security
  • Wang Pingjiang, current Secretary of the Party Committee of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Wang Deyun, current Vice Director of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Lin Jian, current Chief of Political Section of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Li Wensheng, current Vice Director of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Peng Yong, current Secretary of Committee for Discipline Inspection of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Zhou Gang, current Vice Director of Chengdu Municipal Police Department 
  • Yan Wenwan, Vice Director of Chengdu Municipal Police Department
  • Wen Qiang, current Director of Chengdu City Caojia Xiang Police Station

On Dec. 30, 2019, The New York Times reported: 

Wang Yi, the pastor who founded Early Rain Covenant Church, was detained last December… as part of a crackdown on churches, mosques and temples not registered with the state.
While most of Mr. Wang’s parishioners, including his wife, Jiang Rong, were eventually released, Mr. Wang never re-emerged from detention.

*Ms. Sun’s husband arrested and detained at Chengdu Municipal Detention Center during the raid on their home. 

** Baby died in womb. Brothers and sisters from church transported Ms. Sun to Southwest Hospital ER. Pastor Bob Fu (ChinaAid) and other Christians provided financial help to Sun’s and other persecuted families after “crackdown.”
