(Hengyang, Hunan, Province—Jan. 03, 2021) On January 01, New Year’s Day, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Zhengxiang Branch of Hengyang Municipal Police Department issued its first 2021 penalty—to again detain Chen Wensheng for 10 days for preaching the gospel. CCP authorities plan to hold Preacher Chen, a Christian resident of Hengyang they know as a street preacher, in custody at Hunan Hengyang Detention Center until January 10.
Despite police repeatedly arresting and detaining him, with his last 10-day detention starting August 3, Street Preacher Cheng continues to proclaim the gospel on the streets of Hengyang. Passionate about spreading the gospel, sometimes alone, at times with others, as he regularly preaches on streets throughout the busy city, he often holds a cross with the inscription: “Glorify the Lord. Repent, Trust, and Be Redeemed.”
During the pandemic, as he continues to preach the gospel, Street Preacher Cheng distributes masks, Bibles, and gospel tracts to people on the streets. When police arrest him, he says with a smile, “Jesus loves you, God bless you… I will go with you.” When police officers have released him from detention, Street Preacher Cheng has thanked and blessed them.
