Pilgrim’s Progress: Embracing my sick son

my sick son

“For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in
the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.” (Psalm 27:5 ESV)

Yesterday my son had diarrhea and couldn’t control himself in the morning when he woke up and soiled all the covers on the bed. We bathed him and soiled his pants by noon, and by afternoon he was having diarrhea more frequently, almost every hour. His diet was normal, but he was a little tired mentally. From time to
time, he felt pain in his stomach, and at midnight he suddenly cried out for
me, with fear not knowing what to do. He cried, “My stomach hurts, I’m pooping.” I hurriedly reassured him, “Don’t be afraid, I’m here, it’s okay, there are
diapers.”

Son! Do you know that your pain is visible to your father? Dad can only feel
through your painful expressions and know that these pains are real. As real as
our God is. We cannot see Him, but we can know that God is real through all the
things He has created.

O, son! Do you know? How much I love you and how much I would like to bear these pains in your place? But I can’t, and I’m powerless about it.

But you know what? There is one who can. He is not only able to sympathize with our pain, but He was sinless and took on our sins for us in the one sacrifice on
the cross, and He is Christ our Savior.

O, son! All I can do is serve you and make some food to comfort you. But the pain prevented you from enjoying this food as usual. In your sickness, you
discovered that we do not live by food alone, but by every word that comes from
the mouth of God.

O, son! I can take you to the doctor, and the doctor can give you some relief with medicine, but it will not make you well immediately. However, do you know that Christ our Savior is also a mighty physician who can heal all our diseases and
pains?

Oh, my son! I know you cannot understand this now. You know that Daddy loves you, but in fact, there is one who loves you more than Daddy and is more able to help you. Your biological father is only with you and helps you in a limited
time and place. Only God the Father is omnipresent and omnipotent. He is not
only able to heal you, but He is also able to give you spiritual comfort and
satisfaction.

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him!” (Psalm 103:13 ESV)
